Mapoon entry sign

The small community of Mapoon is located in a part of the York peninsula so remote that, at certain times of the year, it is inaccessible except by sea or air. When the team at the Mapoon Aboriginal Shire Council found the opportunity to put up their own council LED sign, they approached Danthonia Designs to take the project from design right through to installation and training, even though ‘the Wet’ or monsoon season was in full swing. In the York Peninsula, during the Wet, 'weather permitting' is used in almost every statement. The contractors who installed the sign said they were lucky to get the sign up in between cloudbursts. A day after the sign was installed, it was coming down again in buckets.

The sign is working effectively as an electronic community notice board and features totems of the traditional groups in the area.
