St Andrew's Ukrainian Church Sign

SAINT ANDREWS UKRAINIAN Catholic Church in the western Sydney suburb of Lidcombe is a striking building in the unique Byzantine style, with arches and beautifully rounded angles on walls and roof. The complex includes a school and preschool as well as a convent and memorial which commemorates 1000 years of Christianity in the Ukraine. The congregation also recently celebrated 65 years of Ukrainian settlement in Australia, bringing together the richness of Australian Ukrainian life through song, artwork, dance, exhibitions, workshops and various forums.

In creating a sign for this beautiful church, we worked closely together with the church members in choosing the right artwork of St. Andrew the apostle. The final choice was then carefully copied and hand painted in the traditional orthodox iconic style using Liquitex professional acrylics and gold gilding. The rounded sign shape was chosen to echo the graceful arches which surround the church building itself. The main text and border groove were incise carved using hand chisels and gilded with 23kt gold leaf, while the subtext was hand carved and painted using Dulux Weathershield Exterior Acrylics – UV resistant paints which use mineral pigments, so most colors will show no fading for at least ten years.<.p>

Since this sign was made from high density urethane which is a waterproof, insect-proof and fire retardant closed-cell foam, it will last for many years to come. It carves, paints, and machines like wood. It looks and feels like wood, having the same density as wood with comparable dent resistance, but weathering is superior since it will not crack, split or warp in the elements.
